Review of One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) by Alex T — 18 Jan 2011
A reviewing of this film nearly 50 years after its release, Disney's "101 Dalmatians" is definately one of the finest films released into the animated cinema world. The film of course follows the birth, kidnapping, and hunt for fifteen, soon to be 99, puppies. The film has had a lasting effect for many years. The villain, Cruela de Vil, is utterly memorable and devious, the film of grief swarming the film in response to the puppies' abduction is powerful, and the animation is fine. Disney's most wonderful film, and still, my favourite of all films.
An additional note, the voice of Pongo, the male dalmatian, was provided by an actor by the name of Rod Taylor, who just celebrated his birthday this month. There are two well no film released in close vicinity of this film: "Giant" from 1956, and Hitchcock's infamous "The Birds" from 1963. Both are very good films, worth the watch, although "Giant" is quite long (his role was small as the brother in-law of Elizabeth Taylor's character).
