Review of One Hour Photo (2002) by Marlene J — 31 May 2009
You can't get as removed from Mork and Mindy as this film is - and therein lies the genius. Robin Williams is superbly cast as Sy; the scary guy from the local wallmart and this is an excellent performance.
Williams is the epitome of malevolent observer and brings a sense of menace to every scene. The washed out colours in the supermarket help you get into the mindframe of the slightly psychotic photo-processing protagonist and the director has done a good job of understating the danger.
This is more unnerving than jumpy and as it careers towards the disturbing finale you'll be on the edge of your seat. When the film has finished you may feel uneasy, and wary - you'll begin to spot the Sy-esque people all aroudn us.
A great film, a great performance from Robin Williams once again proving that he makes quality films time and time again (Popeye excluded).
