Review of One Hour Photo (2002) by Amy M — 24 Jan 2010
I?ve been thinking a lot about music video directors lately, they get a bad name because of hacks like Brett Ratner and McG, but there are some legitimate artists working in the medium. One of my favorite video directors is a dude named Mark Romanek who?s videos for Johnny Cash?s ?Hurt,? Jay-Z?s ?99 Problems,? Nine Inch Nail?s ?Closer,? and many others are as accomplished as any award winning short film.
As much as I dig this guy?s style, only recently did I realize he was the director of One Hour Photo, a film I had had deep toward the bottom of my Netflix queue almost since I started getting Netflix.
Realizing that one of my favorite video directors had directed it I finally bumped it up to the top of the list. I?m glad I did because this is a very effective thriller. Robin Williams is perfectly casted as he can easily do crazy while still being able to evoke his character?s warm external façade.
Romanek did not disappoint me with his visual eye, I think he?s a natural talent in his perfect ability to get just the right angle and look out of every shot. There are some genuinely eerie shots in the film and the stalker at the center is creepy in a way that isn?t clichéd.
I didn?t love the film?s ending but I thought this was a pretty damn successful project.
