Review of One for the Money (2012) by Caleb H — 16 May 2012
Katherine Heigl is the pretty girl at school who can't understand why nobody wants to hang out with her. She's insecure yet abrasive at the same time, and I can't think of a single movie (besides Knocked Up) where she's been any different.
Generally, I either want to kick or club her protagonists, and her interpretation of Janet Evanovich's popular bounty hunter is no different. I think we're supposed to sympathize with Heigl, but she spends most of the film alternately channeling Veruca Salt and Winnie Cooper, which makes for a terribly irritating combination.
And her love interest, to the extent that he is one, seems to have strolled in off the set of The Departed. It's weird, to say the least. To make matters worse, nobody involved seems to agree on the tone of the movie.
Heigl thinks she's in a comedy, but everything else seems to indicate a light-tone crime film with elements of drama and comedy thrown in. To call this movie ineven is being too nice. It's not the train wreck a lot of people said it was, but it's still an unlikable mess with a wretched protagonist and enough tonal shifts to drive even Joss Whedon completely bonkers.
I've never read the Stephanie Plum novels-mostly because the titles make me want to stab my eyes out-and after watching this movie, I'm not going to start.
