When it comes down to Hero and Villain, I do not see one in this film. In the novel, Nurse Ratched is portrayed as a villain but in this film, I do not see that in her. I do not see McMurphy as a hero either.

Nor do I see Ratched as a hero or McMurphy as a villain. I simply see people and their own view points. I see a film that does not take sides. The rebellious war of McMurphy and Nurse Ratched is very entertaining to watch as neither see eye to eye.

Ratched is simply doing her job and while some may say she comes off cold and without sympathy, in her profession working where she does, its probably smarter to leave your emotions at the door. McMurphy is the fun-loving wild man who always seems to cause trouble.

He is the Woody Woodpecker of this ward. While many develop an emotional attachment to his character, I was at a distance. In the shoes of Nurse Ratched, I would have found him repulsive but as a viewer looking in with no role, he seems easy to relate to.

The supporting cast are equally as brilliant as the two leads are and lend themselves to some of the most memorable scenes in film history (particularly Brad Dourif). The screenplay is one of the best ever put to paper and is quite powerful.

The film remains a wonderful clash of wills from beginning to end and one of Milos Formans finest films.
