While this movies main problem is trying to force us to forget about McMurphy's past and the fact that he is only here because of fear of jail and forces us to make him the hero of the story, there is a definite in genuine desire to root for the so-called "mentally handicapped" people that he spends his time with allowing us to realizes the directors vision with this movie.
