Review of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) by Luis G — 18 Nov 2012
This is a great story that is a timeless classic in my book. It has super acting and its clever but in a simple and quite easy going way.
Jack Nicholson's character is the drama version of Clint Eastwood's "the man with no name", very little is explained about this character and why he is there. Mentions about vague previous felonies but that is all!
Louise Fletcher as the head "evil" nurse, is such an amazing anti-villian. The over the top clinical way she deals with dramatic situations can have anyone clenching their fists in frustration, her almost robotic-like acting really does sell this film. I think the relationship between Jack and Louise is a fairly overlooked one cinematically, its a clash of personallities and it's simply an incredibly well written formula.
It's a cleverly written film especially considering the multitude of ecentric characters on show, each is as relatable and sympathetic to the next. It is done flawlessly.
Music in this film is as creepy as it is optmistic, from the theremin 1950's sci-fi creepiness to the classical vinyl recordings in the ward. It fits in perfectly with the theme, setting and mood.
This really is a great film that is touching as it is horrifying and funny as it is sad! Classic :).
