Review of One Eight Seven (1997) by Kostas K — 18 Nov 2010
187 delivers little more than nifty music-video visuals and tried-and-true inner city high school cliches. Jackson pulls off his implausible and ultimately silly caricature of a vigilante teacher in an entertaining but highly unbelievable manner.
It's also always fun to see Jack Kehler and John Heard pop up, and Clifton Collins Jr. (here Clifton Gonzalez Gonzalez) shows some early promise. Ultimately, any argument the film makes towards academic and independent achievement is overshadowed by a dark revenge angle that feels like the sick twisted dream of a bitter high school teacher: indeed, the film's credits proclaim "a teacher wrote this film".
As if that's a good sign.
