Review of One Direction: This Is Us (2013) by Josh T — 30 Aug 2013
I loved this movie. I watched it twice in a row and I would have been more than willing to see it a third, fourth or fifth time. The first thing I will say is, If you get the chance to see the film in the theatre, see it in the theatre. The movie itself is fascinating but seeing it with a room fun of fans dancing and singing and screaming makings the movie that much better.
The movie was excellently directed, the 3D was very well done and the boys were perfection. I really enjoyed the flow between the documentary and the live performances. It didn't feel like they were just randomly putting songs in between scenes; it was a fluid transition. that they touched on the begins of 1D. It was like a walk down memory lane.
The scenes where the boys go home and visit their families is bitter sweet in the best type of way. The way their parents talked about the boys and seeing their mothers tear up in the store at MSG made you realize that just how proud they are of them. Liam's father's interview was by far the most moving part of the film. He talks about how happy he is for Liam but also how he wishes he hadn't left at such an young age. All he wanted to do was take his son out for a drink and play pool and teach him to be a man but because Liam had left with 1D at 16 he wasn't able to do any of that.
My only gripe about this movie is that during several of the live performances Niall's solos were cut out. I know they had to cut some bits out here and there to fit time resistance, but, to be completely honest, it's total bullshit that the parts they cut were Niall's time to shine. Other than that, the movie was per-fect.
I recommend all directioners/anyone who likes the boys to see. Also anyone who is a little iffy on the whole 1D thing, anyone who thinks they might like them and anyone who just wants to know more about what it is like to be so young and have some much power and fame.
