Review of One Crazy Summer (1986) by Darren E — 23 Aug 2009
This was another classic summertime beach 80's movie which leaves you rooting for the underdogs. I would definitely highlight one of the Stork brothers, played by the peculiar Bobcat Goldthwait which allowed for tons of laughs! Also the ongoing animation was a clever addition showing the main character's (Hoops) vision of reality manifested through his drawings.
Hoops McCann played by John Cusack is a recent high school graduate and instead of getting the basketball scholarship to satisfy his parent's wishes, he has his own dream of getting into design school and becoming a cartoonist.
The application process involves writing and illustrating a love story which Hoops doesn't know where to even begin since he's never experienced anything close to it. So after an invite to the island of Nantucket in hopes that the creative juices will flow, all the crazy adventures that occur prove to be the inspiration that he needs to start the next chapter of his life.
