Review of Ondine (2010) by Nadia R — 01 May 2010
I had the pleasure of rushing for tickets to the third showing of 'Ondine' at the Tribeca film festival. The whole experience was a lot of fun, and the film was a worthy spotlight film for the weekend. Neil Jordan tells a beautiful story that tugs at one's heart strings and keeps the viewer guessing. With another great performance, Colin Farrell showed why he received so much early hype in his career, and Alicja Bachleda-Curus was a well cast Selkie (essentially a mermaid). Aided by gorgeous music and sets, an appropriately dreary tone, and quality dialogue, 'Ondine' might find its way to a best picture nomination come Oscar time.
It was not without minor flaws, which included a tendency to drag. I also thought it lacked that "Wow" factor that will make it memorable in 50 years, and I don't feel a compulsion to watch it again.
Whether one gets to see 'Ondine' at a festival or in wide release, he and/or she will not be disappointed--although I don't feel a compulsion to watch it again, I will insist Sacha watch it with me sometime. I highly recommend 'Ondine' as a date movie that has plenty of drama and romantic elements to please the ladies, and plenty of tense, comedic, and twisting moments to keep most men entertained.
