Review of Ondine (2010) by J Audré B — 24 Sep 2010
Well for starters I wanna say its been way too long since i've reviewed a film. I think "Date Night" was my last one, that was way too long ago. But im here to review Ondine the newest film from Neil Jordan and Colin Farrell.
To start out with im gonna give a lot of credit to Colin Farrell who never seems to suprise me when it comes to his acting ability which of course in this film was great and to me he could of easily given the most underrated performance of the year so far.
Its not just his reactions in this film but what mainly got me was his facial expressions and if anybody knows Farrell then they should he is master when it comes to facial expressions. In some scenes he doesn't even need to speak because you can read everything on hs face.
Besides Farrell there was Alicja Bachleda who played the role of Ondine. She was good but nowhere near Farrell's level but still she did have some good chemistry with him and even when she was by herself she still did a good job.
As for Alison Barry who played Farrell's daughter was not that good to me. I thought she held the same emotion throughout the entire film and never changed her facial expression or even changer her tone while she talked.
Besides the acting I have too say the cinematography was amazing and i'll even go the extra mile and say that they were Oscar worthy. Every scene you watch is beautiful even the more darker scenes of the film the cinematography makes every scene look amazing especially when they are out at sea.
Neil Jordan knows how to make a good fairy tale and the direction he took sometimes gave me question marks but after a while you knew who all the characters were and what they had to do with the story.
The screenplay was good but because it stayed authentic in the Irish language which is very imporatnt if your gonna make an Irish film and that it was, this film is a deep and authentic Irish film which could drive some people away from it but that just made me all the more intrested to watch it.
I thought the film would move slow after first starting to watch it but it really didn't but I think Farrell is the one who kept it going for me. Also I thought the ending was a little rushed and maybe they could have added some time to it to make it have a better ending.
But this was a good film with a great performance from Farrell and should be something that people should see. Probably going to be on my underrated list of the year. 80%.
