Review of Once Were Warriors (1994) by Hunter D — 24 Jan 2008
I was completely taken by this movie, which has some of the most intense and explosive performances I've seen on film lately. Lee Tamahori (who would never top this movie) gives the film a dirty, gritty visual sense, while finding truly beautiful things to bring out of the grime.
Maori culture is something one rarely sees depicted in movies that make it into the United States, which made the movie that much more interesting. It's a movie that ultimately stays with you, which is often the sign of a great film.
