Review of Once Were Warriors (1994) by Berneta H — 05 Jun 2008
This a raw and powerful film about a contemporary Maori family, and all of the personal struggles (a ferociously abusive father) and societal struggles they have to endure. The social commentary (as seen, for instance, in the father's socio-economic and race anxieties, anxieties he violently displaces on his wife and others) is subtly laced throughout the film, making it much more than simply a violent film about domestic abuse.
