Review of Once Were Warriors (1994) by Benjamin E — 08 Apr 2010
This is a must for any true film lover. It is the story of a Maori family struggling to make life work in New Zealand.
A once proud people, relegated to second class citizens.
The Heke family is surrounded by violence, drink, and a hope that they can be as proud as their ancestors.
Each family member tries to cope with their lives in their own unique ways. They face adversity and tragedy in their own ways. The wedges that are thrown between them are common and universal. It is heartbreaking. It is moving. It is fantastic.
I would have to say this is one of my all-time favorite films. I was introduced to this movie by my ex-wife. Thanks Cheryl!
