Review of Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) by Tom S — 25 May 2010
An ambitious, sprawling and ultimately pretentious western that fails to achieve a satisfying balance between style and content. It's full of lingering close-ups of the main actors, with many scenes seemingly taking place in slow motion.
The music, while sometimes effective, is overbearing and detracts from the action. It seems to me a film that will split audiences, and those who don't like westerns should definitely avoid. In the end, the only thing I find memorable about this film is the ravishing beauty of Claudia Cardinale.
