Review of Once Upon a Time in the Midlands (2002) by Rebecca B — 12 Dec 2009
Charming little film about mostly charmless people. The cast is splendid. Robert Carlyle's Jimmy is the hard guy who is still really a selfish little boy - we all know them - but Rhys Ifans is just amazing as the weak rival for Shirley (Shirley Henderson - Harry Potter's Moaning Myrtle) who is ultimately the hero.
Ricky Tomlinson and Kathy Burke support with conviction. Most of us probably don't know these sorts of people, but I suspect that somehow this stuff is based upon some close observation. I hope so.
