Review of Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003) by Edward B — 23 Oct 2009
Once Upon a Time in Mexico is Rodriguez at his most self-indulgent. It's essentially a remake of Desperado, except with Johnny Depp and Mickey Rourke in ludicrous sub-plots. On first watch the story seems convoluted, but on closer inspection it's a simple CIA vs Government vs Drug Cartel three way, with plenty of back stabbing.
Despite all of the flaws, this is still very enjoyable owing to the over-the-top action and the show-stealing performance from Depp.
