Review of Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003) by Alex A — 26 Oct 2010
Not corny enough or unintentionally funny enough for it to be an enjoyable B-movie. It seemed as if Robert Rodriguez was not sure of wanting to make a serious action film where common sense (and the laws of physics) exist or into an all out cheesy Planet-Terror style B-movie.
If El Mariachi and the other characters started doing Kung-Fu out of nowhere then it would have been a well defined B-movie. But the movie wasnt serious enough to be good either (Spoiler Alert: El Mariachi is able to defy the laws of physics without getting hurt). The movie was a little silly at times, but the movie was funny when it was suppose to be funny which was cool.
Some of the action ends up being a little hokey at times which was very cringe worthy.
Plus there are some subplots that were really unneeded and kind of killed the movie for me. I thought the movie was suppose to revolve around El Mariachi. instead it revolved around Johnny Depp and seven or eight (maybe 12?) protagonists and antagonists??? I guess Rodriguez wanted to pull a Quentin Tarantino story onto the film but it didnt work here.
Plus all of this happened in a short amount of time (less than 2 hours).
