Review of Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (2019) by Steviegjd — 12 Sep 2019
I have enjoyed all of Tarantino's films, some certainly more than others. This is a really fun film. There are abundant references to TV shows from the late 50s through the 60s, both U.S. and foreign films of the era and another history redux.
There are some things that are fun or clever that do not make a great deal of sense. The attention to detail in making Hollywood look like it did in the 60s is great. Both Pitt and DeCaprio are well suited to their roles.
DeCaprio, in particular, seems to be tangentially parodying his own career. There are different moments that are funny, sweet, insightful, silly and ultra violent. The violence, particularly against women, unfortunately ebbs towards misogyny.
But, at the end, this 60s Hollywood tale is a great deal of fun.
