Review of Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (2019) by Djakeir — 16 Aug 2019
This was a rare miss from Tarantino. The movie was well produced and every scene was fully realised. What it had in detail it lacked in immersions despite both being so interwoven. I'm left scratching my head as to what went wrong for me and when I think about the story I struggle find one other than a look into a brief moment of a few people's lives.
This wasn't really enough for me to care about the characters and really struggle to answer the question of what was the point of this film. One might say it is to shine a light to the masses about the time period in Hollywood but we know Tarantino isn't interested in replicating history.
So what was the point? To tweak events so people can forget what really happened? Even that can't be true because in comparison to the body of work of this great film maker there isn't much to remember in this film.
The acting was top class and again the details were really impressive and the devil is in the details. But I would have liked to see more of the devilish sense of fear when dealing with these events. Could this movie be edited in a way to improve the film, absolutely.
There is a backbone of a good film here but originality should always be commended but not always rewarded.
