Review of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) by Ivan K — 20 Nov 2010
The great Sergio Leone again,....His last film, and it's a work of art,a masterpiece. One of the best gansters films ever done, with Robet De Niro and the whole cast just so amazing, top of their form.
And the music,my god the music, sublime as always,a perfect compliment to the movie,to the actors. Powerful,violent,haunting,heartbreaking,....it got everything, even a sad love story. As glorious an epic as "Once upon a time in the West",this one too is an ode,an homage to a long-gone era.
As Kenneth Turan wrote:"To see this film is to be swept away by the assurance and vitality of a great director making his final statement in a medium he adored." From the first half with the young kids actors, including a very young Jennifer Connelly,to the last frame of Robert DeNiro's smile, this film is incandescent, magnificent,so serenely beautiful,.
..a cinema miracle!!!!
