Review of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) by Jordan F — 06 Feb 2011
While many see the Godfather and the Godfather 2 as the greatest crime films ever made, Sergio Leone's "Once Upon A time in America", is right up there and in my opinion maybe a bit superior Coppola's films.
I loved the Godfather pictures they are truly important American films. However, Leone's picture has truly encapulates the theme of the crime epics regarding the American dream turned nightmare. There was so much love that went into this picture and when it was released in America, the picture was massacred and cut down to a "sizable" 100 minutes.
What makes this picture special is the reasons opposite which make the Godfather pictures special. The Godfather was revered and beloved and Leone's film was neglected and mishandled...greatly.That mistreatment is what allows the audience to experience the picture on a much more personal level.
