Review of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) by Sam H — 21 Mar 2011
Once Upon a Time in America is a brutal, epic, excruciatingly long mob movie telling the story of a group of New York City Jewish gangsters through a span of about 40 years. This is mostly told in flashbacks, seen through the eyes of "Noodles", played by Robert De Niro, and how their choices got him where he is now.
Clocking in at about 3 hours and 45 minutes, this film is not for people with small attention spans, this is a slow-moving, character driven, period piece that may take too long for some people to really get into. This is a shockingly brutal movie, with very graphic violence and two unflinchingly realistic rape scenes that try to show the brutality of the time.
This is a really good movie with some great performances, particularly James Woods, but it's really slow pace and bold style may not be for everyone...but for me, it is worth recommending.
