Review of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) by James H — 23 May 2012
They don't make movies like Once Upon a Time in America anymore. The pacing is ponderous, but not plodding, and all the more immersive for it, especially when we are given time enough to admire what's onscreen.
His direction controlled and purposeful, Sergio Leone takes us on a ride of a lifetime, spanning five decades from the Prohibition era, via the story of crime and greed, of brotherhood and betrayals. Out of a seemingly unorganized jumble of flashbacks, dreams, and either one within the other, all of them strung together by inspired transitions, there emerges a gripping narrative that keeps us guessing at every turn.
Robert De Niro, as expected, all but perfects his role as Noodles, seldom needing lines where looks are more than sufficient. James Woods, playing Max the best friend, is the total surprise; while his unhinged moments may not come close to Joe Pesci's in Goodfellas, they are still convincing and unsettling.
The friendship between Noodles and Max carries the movie, and its development is absolutely fascinating to watch. But what's most amazing is how much life Ennio Morricone's score breathes into the movie.
The movie's length is considerable, but need not be intimidating so long as the execution excels expectations, which Leone's does with seeming ease.
