This film...is a masterpiece. It's simply one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Everything about it works; the acting, writing, direction, cinematography, soundtrack, everything. It's a potent look at the gangster life in America while also dealing with the long-lasting relationship between two friends and how they rose to power and fell.
DO NOT watch the 139 American version! Watch the original 229 cut. It's a loooooooong sit but it's so worth it. This film deserves to be up there with Citizen Kane, The Godfather, and Casablanca as one of the greatest films of all time.
