Review of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) by Gabo A — 07 Jan 2013
A Jewish gangster film. Set in the lower east side. Very early 80s but goes through a 100 years of New York history. De Niro reminds you why he is De Niro. A very perplexing and wandering film that leaves you sad and stupefied.
This and godfather are perfect bookends. No glorification here. No romance. Just a detached view of the absurdity and impossibility of living true. Not to be missed. Every nyc enthusiast must see this and add to the pantheon of great New York Americana.
