Review of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) by Stephen E — 27 Jan 2013
"Once Upon a Time in America" can be considered a success because it doesn't feel as long as its four hour running time suggests that it should. There are parts where it drags and then there are parts that feel as though they should have been elaborated on, but overall, "Once Upon a Time in America" goes by much faster than you'd expect.
Those four hours are needed to establish the film's characters and properly explain their lives, and if it was any shorter, there's a good chance it would be confusing and pretty unsatisfying.
Sergio Leone made better films during his short career, but "Once Upon a Time in America" stands as his most epic work.
