Probably the biggest travesty in movie history is that Sergio Leone was forced to cut 45 minutes to and hour of "essential" footage from this movie. That's taking in to account that the movie is already almost 4 hours long.

I think it's a shame that we'll never be able to see the true masterpiece that this movie is. Even still, it's one of the greatest of all time, and it's the shortest 4 hour movie I think I'll ever see.
