Review of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) by Seth K — 29 Sep 2013
Once Upon A Time In America, my viewing was of the 229 minute version.
A story, hence the title, beautifully crafted to be the greatest crime epic of all time. Yet Sergio Leone (I can only hope) meant it to be more than that. It's depth, spans an entire life. The scope, the vision is of a kid who grows up in a time of changing views. With themes of greed, love, etc.. What this film really came across in (to me) is the struggles/trials of a true relationship. A relationship with life, it's twists and turns. And "Noodles" just seems to take everything life throws at him. For lack of better wording, it's a story of shortcomings in the decisions we make and choices that we give ourselves. In the background of the entire movie is a hidden theme of finding one's morals. I felt a true sense of purpose with this movie, like no other movie ever will. It is best to be seen as a story, of life, of the ending of a time, and the beginnings of another. A true work of art for all to view.
