Review of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) by Jonathan A — 28 Oct 2010
Sergio Leone's final sprawling epic, dealing with the rise and fall of American-Jewish gangsters over the first six decades of the 20th century. Incredibly fascinating, despite it's slow pace. It takes a lot of patience to watch Leone's films, and this one is no exception with it's long stretches without dialogue.
However, this is compensated by some incredibly beautiful photography and acting that does the storytelling in it's own right, along with a beautiful, spaghetti western-esque score by Ennio Morricone.
Certainly one of Leone's best, and an excellent parallel to "The Godfather".
