Review of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) by Jim K — 04 Mar 2013
I saw the restored 3 hour and 45 minute version of this "Classic" over the weekend. What a waste of time. I did, however, enjoy the cinematography and score. And the use of three different time periods was clever. But the dialogue, which was written after the story board was created, to be very poor (it is a really a bad way to do it). In addition, there was overacting from almost everyone.
It was full of illogical and silly scenes. Some of the worse parts were Max repeating "don't call me crazy" and then going nuts (joke in itself)! And Noodles raping a girl during the robbery (who does that?) and then raping the love of his life in the limo (beyond stupid). And Noodles driving the car off the pier with all his buddies (absolutely stupid). And who can forget the haunting final words of the little boy; "I slipped"...(more silly dialogue.).
Overall, it is a silly movie, not worth recommending, and definitely, not worthy of its 87% on RT (in my humble opinion). You want to see a great mafia movie? See either Godfather I and II, or both. Blood is thicker than water.
