Described as a music video album by its director john carney, Once is a love story stripped down of cliches and hollywood gimmicks, it is easily one of the year's best films. filmed in the streets of dublin, it tells the tale of an unlikely friendship between a busker and an immigrant flower girl.

their musical affair begins with an improvised song in a music store in a moment that falls nothing short of bliss. he asks for her help to finish the rest of his songs. in return, she agrees and urges him to deliver it to his former lover believing it would help salvage his damaged relationship.

within a week's time they are writing, recording, and performing songs on route to a partnership that so rarely happens in a lifetime. this film is beautifully executed, from the french new wave-influenced cinematography to the great performances by glen hansard and newcomer marketa irglova, this aching tale will haunt you hours after you leave the movie theatre.
