Review of Once (2007) by Ricardo R — 02 Jun 2010
Ruthe Stein from the San Francisco Chronicle describes it as "...a very little film with a very large heart." No one could have described the film the way this critic did. Indeed, it is a little film that was done simply, but that simplicity was turned into a sincere film.
This little film ended up being humungous. If someone is not a music fan, he or she may find it boring, but that "boring" thing that people may find is what makes it so interesting and what keeps the viewer waiting to see more and what will eventually happen.
The ending reminded me of Vicky Cristina Barcelona (If you haven't seen it stop reading!). Total strangers meet, they have a very good time and even end up having feelings for each other, but in the end they realize that they have their lives behind them and that they must move on, so they say good-bye and take their own route.
Acting was honest, directing was good, but the music is what made the movie what it is. I remember seeing the Oscars a couple of years ago. All of the five songs that were nominated for song of the year were performed, and as soon as I heard Falling Slowly I knew that would be the winner and it did, it got the Oscar.
The song is the reason why I watched the movie.
