Review of Once (2007) by Kristin S — 23 May 2011
This is one of the most unique movies I ever sat down to watch. You know, sometimes you get the feeling you have seen everything when it comes to movies and movie plots, so it is especially refreshing to have something like "Once".
When watching, I was not really sure where its story would take me. After some scenes, it was clear the main characters would not hook up. But what else was this all about?
In the end I feel that this was about music and how the love of music can connect unlikely people and bring them closer. For this, the main characters do not need a lot of words - they just sit down and play together... and you watch and listen enthralled. Beautiful music.
I read beforehand that the director had to make the choice whether he wanted actors in his movie who also could sing a bit, or whether he would pick musicians who also could play.
He did the latter - and I applaud his choice as Glen Hansard and Marà (C)ta Irglova are perfect for this little, independent gem which also is a love declaration to Ireland.
I have a feeling I will watch this again.
