Review of On the Town (1949) by Edmarc H — 31 Jan 2008
I know it was filmed in 1949, but there were many things that I didn't like. The choreography just seemed uninspired (like the cheesy hand motions in the famous "New York, New York" sequence-- is that the best they could do?) and the relationships between each man/woman pair lacked any personal or emotional depth.
I don't know. I know it's important because it was the first musical to film segments on location (with some of the scenes still filmed on set). But I just can't help not particularly liking certain things.
.. like the cheesinest of the second to last scene. It's still enjoyable and humorous. I think I'm one of the few that likes most of the songs, like the off beat, structure-lacking Prehistoric Man.
I guess I just had high expectations because I love Gene Kelly's athletic-style dancing (especially his TAP!!) as well as Singin' in the Rain (another Stanley Donen/Gene Kelly directed film). ah well -- it hurts me to do this, but it fell on three instead of three and one half.
maybe my next viewing...
