Review of On the Town (1949) by Adrian B — 29 Jan 2012
In New York City, three sailors (Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Jules Munchin) leave a navy vessel to have fun "The Big Apple" for 24 hours. The day begins at 6:00 Am and will end at 6:00 Am. There, one sailor (Kelly) falls in love with a poster girl, Ms. Turnstiles (Vera Ellen), who he wishes to be with and so he takes his friends on adventure ride through New York they will never forget. Munchin's characters falls in love with an archaeologist (Ann Miller) and while Sinatra's falls for a cab driver (Betty Garrett).
This is one of the most glorious musicals of all time and one of the most underrated. Kelly and Sinatra shine in their songs and dances, especially Sinatra. His particular toon, "You're Awful," with Garrett is breathtaking. The opening song "New York, New York" is fabulous and the title song sequence is one of the best in the movies. Everyone shines is this great technicolour film!
