Review of On the Rocks (2020) by Moviemitch96 — 10 Oct 2020
In this film from writer/director Sofia Coppola ('Lost in Translation', 'The Virgin Suicides'), Rashida Jones ('Parks and Recreation') stars as a middle-aged married woman who begins to suspect that her successful businessman husband (Marlon Waynes) may be having an affair.
As a result, she enlists the help of her estranged father (Bill Murray) to get to the bottom of it. I was mostly interested in checking this out since it's the first time Coppola and Murray have collaborated since 'Lost in Translation', which remains one of Murray's greatest performances.
And it turns out that they're a winning combination once again, as Murray's wry humor and Coppola's sharp writing pair together perfectly, along with the great chemistry between him and Jones. Moreover, it's full of both fun and touching moments, although the film does start to feel a little safe and predictable as it goes on, and things felt rushed and wrapped up a little too neat and tidy by the end.
However, it was still a fun ride while it lasted. Overall, it's heartwarming and fun, and Coppola's and Murray's talents make it worthwhile.
