On the Road is hard work, its 124 minutes length actually feeling like at least an hour longer; the pacing feels off from the very beginning, and there's a scattered quality about the film that may have worked with bolder editing choices. That said, when the movie is good, it's really good.

The big ensemble full of recognizable faces does a solid job, and Hedlund in particular captures his character's magnetism, sexual drive and more intimate moments superbly. To me it feels as if there's a much better version of the film somewhere, which is frustrating taking into account its many high points, moments that immerse us completely in the period and the characters' sates of mind, scenes where the immaculate production design, music, performances and cinematography come together beautifully.
