Review of On the Basis of Sex (2018) by Devaughn B — 11 Jan 2019
A decent biopic that doesn't seem to really get past anything on the surface. Mimi Leder directs a fine story here, mainly focusing on the very early career of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and family dynamic with her husband Martin and daughter Jane.
I suppose I understand why there hasn't been much, or any buzz surrounding this film. Other than the explosive performance from Felicity Jones as Ginsburg, especially in the third act, the film moves rather slowly up to that point.
Some stellar supporting performances from Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, and Sam Waterston. I wanted to walk away in love with this film but I can't say that happened for me this time around. If you're interested in the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg then I definitely recommend checking this one out.
