Review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) by Wes S — 13 May 2013
Even though I was glad to see Connery back in Diamonds, I did not miss him here. On Her Majesty's Secret Service gives Bond his best story, a deft mix of action, thrills, romance, comedy and, ultimately, tragedy.
Many people dismiss Lazenby because he only got one kick at the can. He was a little misguided in thinking the social upheaval of the 60s would leave Bond a dinosaur in the 70s, but I have nothing bad to say about his performance.
He delivers the quips, looks good in the fight, and has great chemistry with Diana Rigg. Rigg, I must say, is the #1 Bond Girl of all time by virtue of not being a Bond Girl, but the first Bond Woman! Her sassiness, her righteousness and her exquisite beauty make her absolutely irresistible; even more so than Ursula Andress' bikini.
The fact all the set piece are snow-related (always my favourite Bond chases), I'm in sheer Bond geek heaven during the action sequences. Telly Savalas has my pick as the best Blofeld, and OHMSS was my favourite for years.
