Review of Olympus Has Fallen (2013) by Dorian G — 09 Jan 2014
When comparing the two White House invasion films of 2013 (which it's very difficult not to) White House Down is probably the more overall entertaining of the two, although Olympus Has Fallen is probably the more well-made of the two.
The directing is far superior making the action more engrossing and awe-inspiring, and the performances are generally more real. It's plot however was generally less engaging, and aside from its clearly Die Hard inspired template of one man in building taking people out there wasn't much in the story I found particularly engaging or memorable.
Even so the Die Hard formula still works and did enough new to keep that aspect entertaining, and it has some of the best moments of action I saw in any movie of 2013. Its serious tone and above-average direction and performances elevate above many action pics.
Maybe not a great movie, but greatly made, and certainly a great time.
