Review of Olympus Has Fallen (2013) by Todd L — 23 Jun 2014
A movie written to make money hoping people would shell out some dough to see the White House taken down by some foreign extremists. This was 2013's first film featuring this premise, the other being White House Down starring Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum.
For me ... this is the "better" movie but that isn't saying much. In Olympus, Aaron Eckhart (Erin Brokovich) plays the president of the United States who has been rather blue as of late following a family tragedy he is slow to recover from when him and several members of his staff are overtaken by some rogue North Koreans posing as a diplomatic envoy.
Gerard Butler (300) plays a former Secret Service operative who quickly finds himself as the president's best bet at getting out alive. Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Ashley Judd and Melissa Leo costar here as various public/political DC figures in the president's life.
The film wishes to be a crazy "what if" scenario but is ridiculously dumb instead ... North Korea? If it had been anybody else, plausibility might not have been the biggest issue with this film; but .
.. they went there. Sadly, they've made the film a joke before it is ever given a chance to begin. It is action-packed and one can watch it; but that is about it.
