Review of Oliver Twist (2005) by Tyler C — 09 Dec 2007
In terms of cinematic craftsmanship, Polanski has given us no reason to doubt that he is in fact a master. The film is beautifully presented: the cinematography is amazing, the set dressings are considered with immaculate detail, the acting is incredibly well done (Ben Kingsley and Barney Clark were extremely impressive!), and the movie itself was very emotionally charged.
However, though I do thoroughly enjoy period pieces, from the perspective of pure personal enjoyment I found this film far too depressing for my liking. Again, I compliment and respect Polanski for his incredible talent, for as a filmmaker he has accomplished exactly what he set out to achieve.
Putting that aside however, this isn't the kind of movie I'd personally sit down to watch for fun on a Friday night. A beautifully crafted film nonetheless! Well done!
