Review of Oliver Twist (2005) by Leon L — 01 Apr 2008
Polanski managed to transfer some of the most heartwarming moments(especially the last one with oliver's visit to prison) from the classic dickens novel onto the big screen, barney clark was an amazing choice for young oliver for the exact reason Mr.
Sowerberry recommended him as a hired mourner. for a 12year old, he has a countenance that's more melancholic than any director could ask for. ben kingsley was also well casted, his performance really lives upto the expectation one'd usually have for the multifaceted character of Fagin.
And you really have to give credit to all the cast that's involved in the scene with 'the game ' in Spitafield, it was definitely the highlight of oliver's days spent as a 'prig'(as the artful dodger calls it).
although there's no doubt that the film was very well made, it's a little bit too cleancut thus tends to suffer from a slight lack of originality and character.
