Mind-bendingly good retelling of the old Dickens tale-- unaccountably seen nowadays as a kids' book despite its unblinking gaze at child labor and sociopathy. Roman Polanski masterfully explores the entire Victorian idea-- moral and social improvement on a grand scale, coupled with cruelty, exploitation and hypocrisy-- especially as regards women and children.
