The whole film feels unnecessary. If Polanski wanted to make a film that children could watch, he could and should have chosen one of Dickens' other books (of which there are plenty) that are rarely given the five-star treatment.
Aside from the acting being a little sub-standard, it's really not as gripping or as entertaining as it ought to be. A rare blemish in the Polanski filmography.
