Review of Oliver Twist (2005) by Allen D — 04 Jan 2010
Do we need yet another version of Oliver Twist? Well as directed by Roman Polanksi yes we do. A very attractively put together and absorbing adaptation with Ben Kingsley making a very fine Fagin and a high level of competence all round.
Enjoyable cameos from Dickensian character actors like Alun Armstrong, Peter Copley and Liz Smith add to the appeal although in the final analysis David Lean's version is still the better film (as is the musical 'Oliver!').
Very much worth 2 hours of anyone's time though.
