Review of Oliver & Company (1988) by Bobby W — 18 Oct 2011
This movie seems to be the first instance in Disney history where the main character is a cat, a male, and created after Dickin's classic Oliver Twist. As Disney seems to love doing to their characters, Oliver is homeless and orphaned, with no one to turn to.
He falls in with the "wrong crowd" of dogs, and is arguably rescued by a well-to-do young girl named Jenny. This is a movie of villains who have a change of heart, villians who become more evil as time goes on, deaths that are now completely okay to have in a children's movie.
All in all, there's nothing that seems strikingly special about Oliver and Company, as it, once again, has a happy ending where every protagonist is in some way a winner, and the antagonists are sore losers.
This is a cute movie, but not a great one.
