Review of Oliver! (1968) by Jon T — 02 Jan 2012
There have been numerous filmed versions of Charles Dickens' now famous tale of an orphaned boy searching for love on the gritty streets of London. This one is based on the similarly famous musical of the same name, and deserved every Oscar it won.
It's a high-spirited, magnificently choreographed, powerfully directed production complete with Lionel Bart's unforgettable score, spectacular production design, and outstanding performances by the cast.
Mark Lester is an endearingly innocent and compelling Oliver, Jack Wild plays the Dodger with just the sort of smart-aleckyness one would expect, while Oliver Reed turns in a chillingly nasty and vicious-tempered villain in Bill Sikes (who spends most of the movie abusing his loyal girlfriend, played by Shani Wallis, and making dangerous threats).
The highlight of the show is Ron Moody as the unscrupulous crook Fagin, whose musical reinditions of "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two" and especially "Reviewing the Situation" are a delight.
A five-star marvel all around.
